Located in a historic building marked by a brilliantly hand-painted history mural, the San Luis Valley History Museum is a true hidden gem. Established in 1993, this volunteer-supported nonprofit preserves, protects, and celebrates the extraordinarily diverse tapestry of people, industries, and cultures that have called this high-altitude desert home for over 10 millennia.

From ancient Paleo-Indian hunters to early Spanish colonizers, homesteading families, and the booming railroad era, the museum offers an immersive, family-friendly journey into the soul of southern Colorado.

The museum brings local history to life through beautifully preserved, interactive environments that stretch far beyond standard glass display cases:

• The General Store & Trading Post: Walk through a meticulously recreated early mercantile shop, complete with vintage collectibles, antiques, and a model of a historic US Post Office.
• Wayside Country Schoolroom: Take a seat in a classic, turn-of-the-century grade school classroom modeled after the vanished valley town of Wayside, Colorado.
• 1860s Frontiersman Display: View rare, authentic clothing and artifacts worn by legendary local frontiersmen like Tom Tobin, offering a glimpse into the rugged reality of early valley life.
