Great Sand Dunes Piñon Flats Campground
Nestled just one mile north of the Visitor Center inside Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, Piñon Flats Campground offers an unforgettable high-desert camping experience with breathtaking, front-row views of the massive dunefield and the towering Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Open from April through October, this beautifully situated campground features 88 individual sites accommodating up to 8 people, as well as three dedicated group sites for larger gatherings. Because of its incredible location and the popularity of the seasonal Medano Creek, campsites book out incredibly fast. All sites are strictly by reservation and can be booked up to three months in advance, so planning ahead is highly recommended.
The campground balances a rustic outdoor experience with convenient amenities, including potable water spigots, flush toilets, dishwashing sinks, and a seasonal camp store operating during the warmer months for firewood, ice, and basic supplies. Each individual site is equipped with a picnic table, fire grate, and a dedicated bear-proof food locker to keep local wildlife safe. While there are no electrical or water hookups and no campground showers (though seasonal outdoor rinse showers are available at the nearby Dunes Parking Lot), select sites can accommodate RVs or trailers up to 35 feet. To help preserve this delicate environment, visitors are reminded to buy firewood locally, keep pets leashed, and leave hammocks at home to protect the native piñon trees.
