Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad-Explore our History, Scenery & Machinery!
Built in 1880, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a magnificent, living remnant of the historic American West. Its dramatic path through steep mountain passes and deep desert gorges reads like the pages of an adventure novel, offering passengers the ride of a lifetime.
Your journey begins just a scenic 30-minute drive from Alamosa at the station in Antonito, Colorado. Leaving the vast, open plains of the San Luis Valley behind, you’ll watch the imposing peaks of the Rocky Mountains climb into the skyline. As the vintage steam locomotive leaves the flat ground, the real adventure begins. Steaming up to an astonishing 10,015 feet, the Cumbres & Toltec conquers the highest mountain pass reached by rail in the United States.
Heart-pounding views await as the train inches along the sheer rim of the Toltec Gorge, cuts through the historic timber-beamed Mud Tunnel, and rounds Phantom Curve, named for a ghostly spire of rock. After emerging from Rock Tunnel, you’ll peer down from a narrow ledge straight into the dizzying depths of the rushing Rio de Los Pinos below.
