Spadefoot Story Slam: Resilience
18
On April 18th at 6pm, the Spadefoot Story Slam Community is partnering with Resilience Rising for our first recorded slam!
Each month, the Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative hosts the Spadefoot Story Slam community, sharing stories based on a theme, selected at the previous month’s Slam. While inspired by the Moth Story Hour, our monthly meetings are not a contest, but instead are a way to come together and practice sharing, and deep listening.
The theme for April is Resilience: Stories can include moments of navigating a crisis, overcoming a setback at work or in your personal life, how you work through grief, how you survived the early days of COVID, how you adapted to change.
Stories must be true as remembered by you the storyteller and stories must be spoken from the heart, not off the page.
Group Norms:
At the Spadefoot Story Slam, we are here to share stories and listen to each other. We practice sharing our experiences and receiving experiences without commentary. When you’re not the storyteller you are receiving and practicing deep listening. It takes courage to speak in front of a group, and we respect each other’s stories and the time it takes to tell them.
Resilience Rising
We’re excited to partner with the Resilience Rising Project and have our stories recorded. Resilience Rising is a new initiative of the Rio Grande Hospital Wellness Center—using creativity, storytelling, and connection to break down stigma and support mental wellness across the San Luis Valley. Rural communities face unique challenges when it comes to mental health. In the San Luis Valley, stigma, isolation, and lack of accessible care keep too many people from getting the support they need.
Resilience Rising is changing that. They’re creating new, community-driven pathways to healing through art, storytelling, peer support, and shared meals. Rooted in local voices and lived experience, this initiative brings mental health out into the open—where we all can tackle it together.
