Christmas Bird Count at The Great Sand Dunes

Be a Citizen Scientist: Help Track Bird Populations in the San Luis Valley

Join birders and nature enthusiasts in the San Luis Valley to participate in Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), the longest-running wintertime tradition in the Western Hemisphere! This vital citizen science effort helps track bird populations and trends, contributing over a century of data to conservation efforts.

Birders of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to join. We also invite local residents with bird feeders inside the count circle to participate from home!

  • Date: Saturday, January 3rd, 2026
  • Time: Starting at 7:45 AM
  • Location: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Visitor Center
  • Benefit: Registered volunteers receive a fee waiver for park entrance on the day of the count.

To participate in the count at Great Sand Dunes, you must register and sign up as a volunteer.
