Climbing

Penitente Canyon is an experienced climbing area, known for its incredible climbing, camping, and easy access.

The canyon once served as a place of worship for Los Hermanos Penitente - a small but robust sect of the Catholic Church. Today Penitente Canyon, along with surrounding Rock Garden, Sidewinder and Witches

Canyons, still draws worshippers, but now serves double duty as a recreation mecca for climbing sports. A campground is also available just south of the canyon for those who want to stay and soak up the experience a little longer.

To get there from Alamosa, take Hwy. 160 west to Hwy. 285, following it north to La Garita. Head West from the La Garita cash store and veer left just after the pavement ends. Turn right where the main road turns South and take the middle of the three roads. There should be a sign pointing you the proper way. Total trip from Alamosa is around an hour.
