Penitente Canyon Recreation Area

Located west of the small community of La Garita is an amazing geologic site for numerous recreational opportunities.  From La Garita on County Rd G, head west until the road splits, and take the left road, County Road 38A about 1/2 a mile until you get to the Penitente turn off.  The Penitente Recreation Area features 18 walk-in tent sites, 5 drive in tent/camper sites and 2 group sites.

In addition to the numerous mountain biking trails, the Penitente Canyon Special Recreation Management Area is an internationally recognized climbing area, offering more than 300 incredible sport climbing routes.  South-facing routes can be climbed year-round within the recreation area.
